Vegetarian,Especially Vegan, Diet Harmful To Health?

Old cells have been replaced everyday by new cells in our bodies. Would the new cells be as healthy as, if not healthier, than the old ones if we are vegetarians, vegans or meat eaters? As fas as I know, our body needs essential amino acids to grow healthy cells together with other nutrients like vitamins, minerals & etc… Only animal proteins provide a full spectrum of amino acids but plant proteins do not. Then vegetarian or vegan are not getting some essential amino acids which are vital in building healthy cells. In this case, vegetarians or vegans could be jeopardizing their health. I would be happy to hear comments especially from experts in medecine or nutrition science.
1. If veg diet is very healthy, could new born babies survive if fed with plant proteins? Many years ago, several babies died in Israel from feeding with soy-based baby formula. Isreali doctors liked the death to the deficiency of Vit. Bs but no one knows the truth.
2, A human does not survive if he/she lacks cholesterols. How do vegitarians and vegans make them in their bodies since they do not eat meats?

Wait, wait–I think I’m having some Deja Vu….is it just me, or have we seen this posted here before?
I’ve got to take a nap now to stop my head from spinning…
Good luck

Homework about a vitamin?? help!?

i have homework on health and nutrition
and i need help;

the question is;
choose a particular vitamin and produces a repot that explains what happens if you have to little or too much of it,,

- can you tell me what vitamin i should choose and tell me abit about it (:

best and detailed answer will be chosen…

isabella,

Vitamin C a.k.a ascorbic acid. If you have too little of it, you’ll end up with scurvy. You can talk about how sailors used to get scurvy when they went out of see because of the lack of fruits and foods with vitamin C.

No exercise, poor health & bad eating habits. What vitamin(s) can I take to ensure I get the nutrition needed?

I know a lifestyle change would be best, but I am in poor health and cannot withstand the impact of excercise. I am in constant pain and am looking for vitamins that may help revitalize me, or at least get what my body needs to heal itself naturally.

The first thing you need to do is find a mild exercise you can do even if it is nothing more than chair yoga or chair exercises. You can make little changes dietary wise by not buying or not letting others buy the foods that you don’t want to eat such as to many chips or sweets. If the foods aren’t in the house you can’t eat them. As for a multivitamin you need to find a brand that is well absorbed by the body. If it is not well absorbed it won’t do you any good as your body won’t get the proper amount of nutrients from the pill. The body will not just heal itself though with a pill if you do not make some minor changes like getting a little exercise etc.

Lack of Vitamin D Boosts Death Risk
Many people aren’t getting enough of the sunlight-sourced nutrient, researchers say

HealthDay

Monday, August 11, 2008

HealthDay news image MONDAY, Aug. 11 (HealthDay News) — Inadequate vitamin D could increase your risk of death by 26 percent, a new study concludes.

Yet many people are not getting enough vitamin D, which the skin makes naturally when exposed to sunlight. A nationwide survey found that 41 percent of men and 53 percent of women in the United States were not getting enough of this vital nutrient.

"The importance of vitamin D may be underappreciated," said lead author Dr. Michal Melamed, a clinical fellow at Johns Hopkins University. "There are studies that link low vitamin D levels to the development of heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, diabetes, hypertension and different cancers," she said.

The report was published in the Aug. 11 online edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

For the study, Melamed’s team collected data on more than 13,000 men and women who took part in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Levels of vitamin D were collected in 1988 and 1994, and the participants were followed through 2000.

During more than eight and a half years of follow-up, 1,806 people died. Among these, 777 died from cardiovascular disease. Four hundred of these people were found to be deficient in their vitamin D levels.

"Those who had the lowest levels of vitamin D had a 26 percent higher risk of death from all causes compared to those with the highest vitamin D levels," Melamed noted.

The findings in this study confirm a trend seen in other studies linking vitamin D deficiency to increased risk for breast cancer and depression in the elderly, the researchers noted. Melamed’s group had previously shown that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of peripheral artery disease (circulatory problems in the legs) by 80 percent.

Among other things, vitamin D is essential for maintaining levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body. "Vitamin D may be very important for overall health," Melamed said.

According to the U.S. Institute of Medicine, people should get between 200 and 400 international units of vitamin D a day. The best way to get vitamin D, naturally, is by being out in the sun.

As little as 10 to 15 minutes of sun a day can give you all a vitamin D you need. Vitamin D is also available in small quantities in foods such as fish and milk.

Whether vitamin D supplements are effective isn’t yet known, Melamed said. "That’s the million-dollar question," she said.

"I think people should optimize their diet and sun exposure to get an adequate level of vitamin D without taking supplements," Melamed said. "It may be a good idea for people who are at risk for vitamin D deficiency, including African Americans and people who don’t spend a lot of time in the sun, to get their vitamin D levels checked by their doctor."

Dr. Michael F. Holick, director of the Vitamin D, Skin and Bone Research Laboratory at Boston University Medical Center, advocates high levels of vitamin D supplements to maintain good health. Vitamin D deficiency is probably the most common medical problem worldwide, Holick said.

"We know that being vitamin D sufficient reduces the risk of having your first heart attack by more than 50 percent, reduces the risk of having peripheral vascular disease by as much is 80 percent and decreases the risk of prostate, colon, breast and a whole host of other cancers by as much is 50 to 70 percent," Holick said.

In addition, not getting enough vitamin D also increases your risk for type 2 diabetes, Holick noted. By increasing your vitamin D intake to 800 international units a day reduces the risk of developing diabetes by as much as a third, he said.

Holick recommends taking high doses of vitamin D supplements, as well as sun exposure. In addition, Holick recommends taking as much as 1,400 international units of a vitamin D supplement every day.

HealthDay

It seems to lean more towards health than biology. For biology, my guess is that you’d need to focus on the biological functioning of the vitamin.

But I think, for a report, it will be sufficient, because it does deal with a biological topic. Medicine is largely based on biology.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Fibromyalgia?

Has anyone with or know anyone that has been pretty much cured by taking extra Vitamin D. This is a site posting about it..hummm

The connection between fibromyalgia and vitamin D deficiency is gradually coming to a better understanding as more research studies are linking the muscular pain and weakness, experienced by fibromyalgia patients, to an insufficient intake or poor absorption of vitamin D in the body.

Several studies on both children and adult subjects have found that low levels of vitamin D in the body lead to unexplained bone and muscular pain. These findings have been received with excitement by health professionals because if the connection between fibromyalgia and vitamin D deficiency can be verified, the pain and weakness of patients suffering from fibromyalgia will be possible to treat with nutritional sources of vitamin D. However, this does not mean that fibromyalgia is simply a deficiency of vitamin D in the body; the latter is only a factor in developing or aggravating symptoms of fibromyalgia.

The Connection between Fibromyalgia and Vitamin D Deficiency

The observed improvement in the overall condition of fibromyalgia patients using vitamin D indicates a strong connection between the disease and the function of vitamin D in maintaining bone and muscular health. The role of vitamin D in contributing to the development of fibromyalgia is thought to be rooted in its metabolic function. Vitamin D helps in the synthesis of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the body.

The parathyroid hormone serves to extract phosphates, especially calcium phosphate, from the bones. Combined with other factors, a failure to extract adequate amounts of phosphates from bones can lead to fibromyalgia. In case of vitamin D deficiency, the body is depleted in parathyroid hormone and hence an abnormal retention of phosphates in the bones may initiate a march toward symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Sunlight, Fibromyalgia and Vitamin D Deficiency

One linking factor of significance in the connection between fibromyalgia and vitamin D deficiency is a person’s exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D forms in the skin upon exposure to sunlight for about 15 to 30 minutes. Limited exposure to sunlight on account of climatic factors, lifestyle, skin color, or any other reason, can result in vitamin D deficiency in the body, even when a normal course of nutrition is followed.

Health experts are now approving the idea that small amounts of unprotected sun exposure can be health-friendly, especially for patients of fibromyalgia. Since this disease of muscular weakness and pain develops slowly over several years, it seems reasonable to reduce the use of sunscreen while out on a moderately bright day and change a completely sun-protected lifestyle

This is the answer I gave on another posting about thyroid hormones. Fibromyalgia has a very high incidence of co-morbidities (accompanying diseases)
It is very good practice when one is diagnosed with fibromyalgia to test for thyroid hormones. If thyroid hormones are abnormal, they must be corrected and this will help you improve. If you improve it does not mean that you don’t have fibromyalgia!
If you do not improve your thyroid hormones will be checked again to make sure your medication dosage is ok.
Thyroid is not the cause of fibromyalgia and if you have thyroid problems it does not mean you don’t have fibromyalgia.

Check this site: www.fibromyalgia-information-relief.com

The same apply to Vitamin D. However, the fact that fibromyalgia sufferers tend to stay inside decrease their ability to synthetise Vitamin D through sun exposure and their vitamin D levels may be normal to start with but can become lower a few years later. So it is a good practice either to take vitamin D supplements or expose to the sun or to review serum levels at regular intervals (every second year).

The site I gave you above does have info on nutrition that may help.

what do you think about your health?

how do you measure up to this guidline about health.

" Balance nutrition with calories"
Many people eat too many calories yet fail to eat enough nutrient dense foods. Limit the intake of saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, added sugars, and salt. Choose foods high in vitamins, minerals and fiber. The USDA’S Mypyramid and the DASH eating plan are good plans that translate nutrient recommendations into food choices.
I have a reason why I put it in this section!

Regardless of how well you eat or how much you exercise, you’re still going to get a toe tag one day.

For years I’ve been using real butter, real sugar, drinking 2 cups of coffee per day, snacking on crap, and you know what?
My bad cholesterol is low, and my good cholesterol is low.

Overall, I’m in really good health, and I rarely see the doctor except for an outbreak of poison ivy.

How many medical doctors have had CME’s in nutrition and glyconutrient technology?

Can any of you tell me how, in this day and age where America ranks 37th in the world for health care, 42 for longevity, 72 for overall health, how we are deficient in all the drugs you prescribe?
I just read a response from a GP to a question about the need for vitamin supplementation and can’t believe the response!

I suggest you take the time to research the ample amounts of scientific literature regarding modern farming practices, the lack of nutrients in our food, the preservatives and additives found in our food supply, and do your patients the service you took an oath to uphold. FIRST DO NO HARM.

Have any of you read Ch. 56 from Harper’s Biochemistry 26th edition or Ch.46 27th edition? How can we be missing the required glycoforms if our diet was able to meet the cells need for proper structure?

Certainly you don’t think we were born with deficiencies in all the scripts you write?

If you lost your prescription pad how could you treat your patient?

Research has proven that the average American is ingesting far too many toxins on a day to day basis. You can read USDA government reports, FOR FREE, all day long, stating how toxic our food and water supply are…Doctor’s recommend that you cleanse at least twice a year….there is only one cellular cleanse on the market and it is not expensive at all…my family and I have been using the product for a year now….the first time, I lost 10 pounds in 9 days!!…..check out this site…

Could someone who knows about nutrition, and vitamins tell me if my list of vitamins looks ok (inside)?

1 Men’s health formula multi vitamin tablet,
1 D-3 400 IU tablet,
2 100 mg. Korean Ginseng capsules,
1 Cranberry Fruit 1,500 mg. soft gel which also contains vitamin C,
1 Folic Acid 400 mcg. tablet,
1 C vitamin 500 mg.

And I also drink a small amount of apple cider vinegar each morning. And I drink a very small amount of extra virgin olive oil, a very small amount of it.

I also drink a cup of kava kava tea every day, and I’m thinking about drinking some chamomile tea.I also eat a banana for break fast, and usually a hamburger for lunch with cheese and mayonnaise on it. I’m trying to lose weight. Some times I also drink a diet poweraide that is supposed to have all the vitamin B complex in it. And I drink plenty of water.

Does this sound healthy? And can you give me any tips on dieting? I want to eat more leafy greens like spinach because I’ve heard they are one of the best things to include in your diet. I also sometimes but some lemon juice in my ice water, but I don’t have any at the time.

I’m on some psychotropic medication, and one anti depressant, and a muscles relaxer, and ultram for back and knee pain. But it’s not a controlled substance yet. And I take all of my medication like I’m supposed too. I’m just wanting to make sure my liver, kidneys and heart are healthy.

You may want to check about the interactions of some herbal supplements with your medicines, i.e. ginseng and especially kava kava.
As we all know some of our medicines can make weight loss almost impossible so I hope you have good luck with that.
One thing I do take that you may benefit from is fish oil 1000mg gels. It helps heart health, lowers triglycerides and is full of omega 3, which by the way spinach has as well and perhaps you are craving it.
Everything else you take sounds very healthy.

Nutrition test – Is there a test to determine if ones body is lacking in any vitamins or minerals?

My doctor says most people are deficient in magnesium. Is there a certain test to ask for that will determine such deficiencies? And if so, why isnt such a test routine for general health maintenance?

Yes. There are many effective tests for nutrition. The American Medical Association does not require in depth nutritional study for Medical Doctors. This is why your doctor most likely does not test or recommend nutritional therapies. Hair Mineral Analysis is an effective way of accessing mineral and toxin present in the body. You can request testing kits and send in a hair sample easily and inexpensively. Quantum Reflex Analysis is also a great evaluation for personalized nutrition. Nutrition is very important. I would always encourage friends and family to assess nutrition and if needed detoxification before any other health measures.

health and nutrition?

how do i get all the recommended vitamins, minerals and nutrients and everything else in my body every day.where can i find a meal plan thing that can tell me like if i have this this and this for my breakfast lunch and dinner i will get everything i need for that day.thanks

Well in point of fact you might not get every mineral and vitamin every day — but overall during say a week if you consume a healthy diet or fresh vegetables with a limited amount of complex carbohydrates, avoid white death foods like sugar, flour and product made from the same. Drink a fair amount of good clean water (that is to say not chemically polluted tap water, but a reliable natural source — such as French mountain mineral waters) and follow the guideline of eating as many different ‘colours’ when it comes to vegetable — as possible (each major colour provides certain nutrients that are valuable… Then you should get all you need.

The key is to avoid nutrient-poor processed food and eat only fresh foods, Eat a good proportion of raw food for the live enzymes that are lost in cooking (this means large quanitites of salad foods, and other almost all other veges can be eaten raw, daily).

I recently mentioned this page on another answer but the outline included here will make sure that you get all the nutrients you need for health:

01.30.10

what are the best vitamins for maintaining good health?

To eliminate that tired feeling, supplement poor nutrition habits, dry skin, loss of hair.

Vitamins that use Fructose compounding are the best. They allow 96-98% cellular absorption of the minerals more than any other on the market. That is why they have a scientific patent. Liquid vitamins tend to separate and do not taste very good usually, colloidal vitamins have a decent absorption rate but that type of compounding limits absorption to under 50% of minerals.

Hair Health Recovery Following Surgery/Poor Nutrition?

I had a Gastric Bypass done June 2nd last year. I have been struggling with my nutritional status and surgical recovery since then (naturally). But something confuses me. I thought hair was essentially "Dead Cells".

#1 How can they get less healthy? By that I mean the already-grown out hair. I can see new hair coming in being less healthy… but how can old hair get ‘sick’?

#2 How, then, can it get healthier? I mean, using shampoos and conditioners would more or less be ‘cosmetic’ right? As in, it LOOKS healthier, but it isn’t really, right?

#3 I have been using a Mega-Vitamin shampoo made by TIGI called Self-Absorbed Bed Head Shampoo http://www.tigihaircare.com/us/products/img/bedhd/shamp/SAS-info.jpg . It was Recommomended by my stylist who knows my nutritional history and states that this will help my hair recover faster.

CAN hair recover? Or just LOOK better?
CAN conditioners and shampoo heal your hair? Or am I just dreaming a Pipe Dream here?
I had a very good surgical recovery. I actually was able to return to work within 3 1/2 weeks. I am an RN and I had very supportive staff with me. I take Multivitamins and Calcium. I try to get in a good amount of protein. My hair is below shoulder length now, but I have been letting it go curly without drying it and putting it up into a Gibson Girl style to reduce stress and damage. Like This:

http://www.intimelyfashion.com/hair/images/gibsonbraids4.jpg

I’m a stylist and I’ve heard that some of the pain meds they give you when you have surgery or give birth can cause hair loss. You have to be patient and wait a few months until the hair starts growing in normally. In the mean time, use Nioxin Cleanser, Scalp Therapy, and Follicle Booster. Nioxin products are all natural and work by increasing blood circulation to the hair follicles. I have seen it work for clients that have thinning hair.

Since ancient times, black elderberry juice extract has been used as a homeopathic remedy for flu, colds, coughs and respiratory infections. It is wonderfully effective in immune-boosting and prevention. It is the only elderberry extract that contains a unique anti-viral compound called Anti-Viren, as well as antioxidant flavonoids which enhance the immune system by blocking the mechanism by which viruses penetrate the host cells. It has been involved in many favorable clinical studies; data showing that it cuts complete recovery time in half, reduces symptoms, and works in nearly 90% of all cases. It is a very safe product, and in it’s liquid form, quite easy to ensure effective cold and flu prevention. It has no contraindications with any known products or medications, and although all research has been extremely positive, it has not yet been evaluated by the FDA. I want to start taking vitamins to improve over all health. Recommendations?

I don’t want any regimen that has me popping 18 pills a day, nor a bunch of powders, liquids, etc.

But I don’t want to short change on nutrition either.

What’s a reasonable plan?

Just take one-a-days for your body, and you should get omega-3s because those are good for your mind. Those with a well balanced diet will be close to perfect.

Do the absorbtion of iron and vitamin E interfere with each other in the human body?

About 10 years ago, I read a booklet published by Superdrug (a very well known health and beauty shop in the UK) that at least six hours should be left between taking an iron supplement and taking a vitamin E supplement as one prevents the absorbtion of the other in the human body-

Is this true?

Lately, I’ve searched more recently published books on nutrition and I’ve yet to see this fact mentioned in any of them.

Is there anyone out there who can enlighten me- or at least point me in the right direction to read up a bit more on this?

I’d really love to hear from any medical people who read this question-
Thanks

I’ve studied tons of nutrition and from all my work, I’ve never heard of this. Even the WikiPedia has no mention of this, so I’m sure it was a miscalculation on the authors of the original text you read.

Is there a term for people who feel better when underweight that is not connected to an eating disorder?

I feel better when I am underweight, and have put on muscle mass to get to normal weight but hate the extra weight nontheless. I want to be slender and light, and always underweight, but am highly into nutrition and vitamins and overall health. Is there a term to describe someone who is uncomfortable being anything but underweight, but is not eating disorder related?

No its fine to be underweight if you are eating healthily and getting the nutrients your body needs.
If you know you are underweight you don’t have a disorder, and you just like yourself being this way
If this helps your confidence its fine!
stay healthy and have fun :)
